George Robert Waymire was born on June 16, 1924 in Scranton, Iowa. George finished the 10th grade at Lemoore High School then joined the National Guard on Oct. 11th 1938. He was Honorably discharged on Dec. 2nd 1940. He joined the Navy on Oct. 27th 1941. After boot camp in San Diego he was assigned to the USS Chaumont and USS Virginia. He attended Fire Fighting School in Brooklyn before being assigned to the USS Hancock in April 1944, as a plank owner. He was in the 1st Div., as 1st loader, 5-inch gun, mount 4. On April 7, 1945 George received the Navy Marine Corp. Medal for carrying 4 shipmates to safety amidst fire and exploding ammunition. George participated in 10 battles and received seven medals and ten battle stars, rank received S 1/C. He married Dorothy Clark in 1944 and had three children, Randy, Becky & Carol. They have 5 grand- children & 3 great grandchildren. George retired in 1987 after 41 yrs. with Western Label Co., in LA, Calif. He retired in So. Lake Tahoe Calif. where he adopted another daughter, Christina. George was also like a grandpa to Christina's 2 nieces. George survived WW2, 3 quadruple heart bypasses & heart surgery on his Aorta, 2 knee replacements and 2 wives. He rode his scooter to Raley's and other places in So. Lake Tahoe before passing away at Barton Hospital on May 17th 2012, just shy of his 88th Birthday. George lived a great life and was very proud of all of his kids and grandkids. We were all proud of him and not just for WW2, but to be 100% disabled and to keep on going with the help of his daughter Christina and her family all these years. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be missed I'm sure by a lot of people in So. Lake Tahoe. By his request, his cremains will be taken to San Diego and taken out on the next ship leaving to be deposited in the ocean at their convenience. We all loved him a lot. He thought mostly of others before himself. He's in heaven and we will all see him someday. PDF Printable Version
